On the 31st of May, the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre hosted two events showcasing interdisciplinary research in digital health and care in Scotland. The events featured past and present students whose study was supported by DHI’s Scholarship Scheme, which has been supporting master’s students in digital health and care since 2015, by funding over 120 scholars in 18 disciplinary areas across 10 Scottish Universities.
In the morning, current master’s students from Health Psychology, Exercise Science, Health Services Research and Design discussed their work-in-progress dissertation projects as part of DHI’s Annual Student Seminar. The presentations covered digital interventions supporting patients with insomnia, sedentary lifestyle, cancer patients, diabetes, migraine, and asthma; and online arts groups, the use of digital tools in counselling services, and how patients’ and nurses’ experiences can inform the development of digital tools.

The afternoon saw Scotland’s first ever Digital Health and Care Master's Alumni Conference. The event was opened by Dr Sanna Rimpiläinen, Head of Research and Skills at the DHI, with a short overview of the master’s funding programme to date, followed by course introductions to five of the courses supported by the DHI. These included MSc in Digital health systems at University of Strathclyde (UoS), MSc in Data Science at University of Highlands and Islands (UHI), MRes in Design at Glasgow School of Art (GSA), MSc in Integrated health and social care leadership at University of West of Scotland (UWS), and MSc in Health Psychology at University of Stirling (UoStir).
Presentations from the Alumni students drew on diverse topics offering insight into a range of work supported through the DHI’s scholarship scheme. These included digital interventions supporting people with sedentary lifestyle, people living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and diabetes, and the wellbeing of care workers.
An expert Jury consisting of Professor Lynn-Sayers McHattie (GSA), Dr Lisa McCann (UoS), Dr Andrew Duncan (UHI), and Dr Wendy Maltinsky (UoStir) selected top three presentations based on the academic contribution, policy relevance and delivery. The prizes went to Ailsa Morrant (GSA), who presented on how jewellery practice can inform the design of telehealth devices; Kerri Thornton (GSA), who discussed how extended reality (XR) can be used to tackle anxiety; and Janette Hughes (UoS), who proposed a new service readiness level framework for implementing digital technologies across health and social care services.
